The Jazz Futures Fund: Honoring Douglas R. Roach

In memory of Seattle Jazz drummer, Douglas R. Roach, this fund reflects his love for the jazz art form, his commitment to sharing that love through performance and education, his desire to ensure that racial and gender minorities are better represented on stage and in the classroom, and his belief that local professional jazz artists should be compensated for their work.

This fund ensures JazzED’s financial stability during a significant period of growth. Proceeds from the fund will support program growth to serve more students, particularly students from communities who have not traditionally had access to the life-changing opportunity of music education.

Because of Douglas Roach’s passion for drumming, a percentage of the fund will be set aside to finance an annual educational festival for middle and high school students that features a drumline competition, percussion master classes taught by drum professionals, and a concluding concert featuring regional artists, with a particular focus on female artists and artists of color. This festival will be the culminating event to an academic year of drumline and percussion programming at JazzED, as well as partnerships with schools across the region.
